Bringing people together to help the homeless animals of Rowan County, North Carolina.

Shelter Guardians, Inc. is a proactive, 501c3 non-profit organization whose purpose is to bring people together to help the homeless animals in the Rowan County community. We will strive to better the lives and ease the stress of homeless animals as we work together to meet the animals’ ever-changing needs. Shelter Guardians, Inc. is an all-volunteer organization that has no paid staff, board, or employees. We welcome any man, woman or child who wants to share in our mission.

Although we are not affiliated with the Rowan County Government, Shelter Guardians, Inc. will work closely with the staff of the Rowan County Animal Shelter to identify and provide care for the animals in their care, and also the homeless animals in the Rowan community. Shelter Guardians plans to be working towards facilitating spay/neuter in the Rowan County Shelter and the Rowan Community in the future thru education and financial help. After “gifting” Rowan County Shelter with a state-of-the-art spay/neuter facility for the shelter animals, Shelter Guardians will now be looking toward solutions for controlling the population of homeless animals in the Rowan Community.

Shelter Guardians, Inc. will always stand ready to work together and be the guardians of Rowan’s homeless animals on their journey to the home they all deserve!

Shelter Guardians, Inc. is owned by those who support it and honor the commitment to provide better care for Rowan animals in need. The lives of our homeless animals are literally at stake, so it is imperative we act immediately on their behalf. Please join in this exciting community-wide effort!

Our Mission

The mission of Shelter Guardians is to provide volunteers and support for the homeless animals at the Rowan County Shelter, and in the community. Through our programs we facilitate shelter adoptions and assist in decreasing the number of animals returned and surrendered to the shelter. Our programs also educate children and youth about humane treatment of all companion animals, and the need for spay and neuter. Our purpose is to reduce the number of animals in need of a home, both at the shelter and in our community, by highlighting the contribution that companion animals can make to a person’s life when they are given a chance.

Nina Dix Dog Adoption Center

The Nina Dix Dog Adoption Center was “gifted” to the Rowan County Animal Shelter and Rowan homeless animals on Saturday, June 17, allowing visitors and supporters to view all of the amenities and services the building will provide to homeless shelter animals in the future.

Although the building will house only dogs, both cats and dogs will receive medical services and surgery in the Nancy Stanback spay/neuter surgery center within the adoption center. The building has been meticulously planned to give the Rowan County Animal Shelter the chance to provide the best possible medical care for dogs and cats and for housing the dogs that will be held there. The 11,600-square-foot building provides over 42 new dog kennels as well as four new visitation rooms for people and families looking to adopt to privately and quietly meet with dogs.

The center is named after Nina Dix, a local dog trainer/behaviorist and the chairman of the board of directors for Shelter Guardians. The multi-million dollar building was designed, constructed, and financed solely through private donations made to Shelter Guardians, with no tax dollars involved.
